Inferior Vena Cava Filter Placement (IVCF)
Inferior vena cava filter placement is percutaneous deployment of a mechanical filter in the IVC to reduce embolization of lower-extremity or pelvic venous thrombus to the pulmonary arteries. Its clearest role is acute VTE when therapeutic anticoagulation is temporarily impossible; it does not treat existing DVT or PE and does not replace anticoagulation once anticoagulation becomes safe. A retrievable filter with structured follow-up is preferred for a transient indication because prolonged dwell increases thrombotic and device-related complications.
